The Quick Pick

Yuniel Dorticos has been a very good fighter with a very hard punch, who seemed to always finish short of reaching the very top in his prime. He lost his only 2 fights to elite competition in a 12th round TKO loss to Murat Gassiev almost 7 years ago in February 2018. He also lost his second and last fight against an elite opponent almost 5 years ago in September 2020 by a wide decision against Mairis Briedis and losing his IBF Cruiserweight title he had just won in his very first defense.

In his prime, Dorticos was always an exciting fighter to watch due to his skills, granite chin, and his power, which could end his fights in the blink of an eye. And in looking at this upcoming fight against Gilberto Ramirez, we must never forget the important fact that a prime Dorticos lost the title to Briedis way back in September of 2020. That fight clearly marked the end of Dorticos's prime and that fight was FIVE years ago, back when Dorticos was 34 years old.

Ever since then Dorticos has had only THREE one-sided fights against the very lowest level competition possible. Five years have passed since his fight with Gassiev and Dorticos is now 39 years old, and in those last FIVE years Dorticos has only had those THREE fights. He won the first two of them by 2nd round TKO and won his very last one by a 1st round KO over a year ago. To summarize that, Dorticos has fought a total of less than FIVE ROUNDS in the last FIVE YEARS while he aged from 34 to 39 years old and the reality, as explained above, is that the last 5 years have bordered on total inactivity for the now 39 year old Dorticos.

Gilberto Ramirez will only be only the THIRD elite fighter that Dorticos has ever faced. Ramirez is a 34 year old southpaw whose only loss came at the hands of Dimitry Bivol by a decision. Since that loss, Gilberto Ramirez took almost a year off and prepared himself to move up in weight and begin fighting in the Cruiserweight Division. He has clearly found a new home there, as he is performing as well as he ever has in this weight division.

Since moving to Cruiserweight, Ramirez has beaten the very tough Joe Smith Jr, the previously undefeated Arsen Goulamirian and in his most recent fight, Ramirez gave his best performance and comprehensively beat the very talented and durable Chris Billiam-Smith who was the reigning WBO Cruiserweight champion. Ramirez won the title in that fight, so this fight against Dorticos will be Ramirez's first defense of the WBO Cruiserweight belt that he won from Billiam-Smith.

In doing a quick pick for this fight, it seems an almost impossible hurdle for Dorticos to possibly beat Ramirez, as many would likely doubt that Dorticos could have beaten Ramirez even if Dorticos was still in his prime. But now, at the age of 39, and with almost no activity at all in the last 5 years, I give Dorticos as close to zero a chance of winning the fight against Ramirez as one can give any fighter in the very unpredictable world of boxing, and the odds reflect that most people feel the same way too.

Ramirez IS going to win this fight and in order to decide how to bet this fight, the suggestion here a prop bet because a straight win bet on Ramirez is paying VERY LITTLE at -1400 on Bet365.com.

In looking for a potentially solid prop bet, one must consider that Ramirez is not truly a power puncher and Dorticos has always had a good chin and been very resilient, but it must also be considered that Ramirez CAN BANG when he has to, as he has 30 KO/TKO wins out of his 48 fights. In addition though, we must add in the fact that Ramirez has not yet scored a KO/TKO in his fights at Cruiserweight.

However, that fact can certainly be overlooked heading into this fight, as Ramirez has faced some of the very best competition out there in those 3 fights at Cruiserweight and has also been improving at this weight class with each successive fight, as he is now the reigning WBO Cruiserweight Champion.

The bottom line is that Ramirez is still fighting at the top of his game at Cruiserweight, and the aging Dorticos, at 39, is not going to have the luxury to work through any of his certain ring rust nor will he be able to avoid the inevitable slowing down of his ageing reflexes against an experienced, talented and tough fighter like Ramirez.

On this end, all the above seems to add up to the fact that Ramirez will get his first stoppage at Cruiserweight and the 31st KO/TKO of his career against Dorticos, despite Dorticos's resiliency, and most likely sometime in the middle to late rounds.

  • The prop bet here is "GILBERTO RAMIREZ TO BEAT YUNIEL DORTICOS BY KO/TKO" which is currently paying -120 on Bet365
  • This is 5/6 in fractional odds,  1.83 in decimal odds format.
